The Diem Association is a member-based association dedicated to building a blockchain-based payment system that supports financial innovation, inclusion, and integrity.

Open Source

Fostering an open-source community to spur the development of a robust network of financial participants and services that help people access and use the Diem Payment Network.

Scalable

The Diem Payment Network (DPN) will scale through responsible innovation by adding approved participants and services over time, and follow a phased approach to offer payment functions on the DPN to a greater number of people.

Secure

The DPN is built on blockchain technology to ensure that transactions and other services on the network are secure, protecting consumer end-users and fighting financial crime.

Role

The Association is responsible for the governance of the Diem network and the development of the Diem project.

Organization

The Association Council functions as a general assembly of Association members, with each represented by an individual representative. The Association’s Board of Directors functions as a supervisory body for the Association. The Technical Steering Committee (TSC) comprises members who supervise technical design and development of the Diem Blockchain. The Social Impact Advisory Board (SIAB), comprised of members who promote the Association’s social impact initiatives, works to further the Association’s goal of financial inclusion.

Governance

The Association is governed by the Diem Association Council, which is comprised of one representative per Association Member.

Implementation

Diem Association members run (or have run on their behalf by Diem-approved service providers) the validator nodes that operate the Diem Blockchain. Validator nodes are responsible for securing the network and validating transactions on the Blockchain.

Strategy

Diem Association members are responsible for shaping and driving Diem’s strategy of creating an accessible and lower-cost payment network built on innovative blockchain technology. Association members have equal voting rights in the Association to ensure that no one Member has too much control over the network.

As General Counsel of Diem Networks US, Saumya is responsible for advising executives, senior management, and the Diem Networks US Board. Saumya brings more than twenty years of experience in the public and private sectors focused on financial services.

Steve BunnellChief Legal Officer, Diem Association and Diem Networks US

As Chief Legal Officer, Steve leads overall legal and regulatory strategy and is the Chief Counsel to the Diem Association and Diem Networks US Boards and executives. Steve brings a wealth of legal experience at the highest levels of government and private practice.

Christian CataliniChief Economist, Diem Association and Diem Networks US

Christian is the Chief Economist, co-creator of Diem, and a professor at MIT (on leave). He is focused on the economic, market design, growth incentives, and business model aspects of the project. He brings experience in cryptoeconomics, strategy, and entrepreneurship to the leadership team.

As the Chief of Staff and Chief Strategy Officer, Christy drives overall strategy and leads external relations for the project. Christy brings two decades of financial services, compliance and national security experience across the public and private sectors.

Sterling DainesChief Compliance Officer, Diem Networks US

Sterling is the Chief Compliance Officer of Diem Networks US and leads all aspects of financial crime compliance. Sterling brings extensive experience in numerous compliance disciplines, particularly related to financial crime compliance, and has had leadership roles across banking, financial services, consulting and standard-setting bodies.

James EmmettSenior Adviser, Non-Executive Managing Director, Diem Networks (CH)

James serves as Managing Director overseeing the day-to-day operations of Diem Networks (CH) and providing overall executive leadership. James brings vast experience as a financial services leader.

Kurt serves as Head of Internal Business Operations and HR and is responsible for human resources, as well as internal business and operational coordination and alignment.Kurt has years of experience in building and managing global efforts across payments, mobile technology, and fintech projects.

Dahlia serves as the overall technology lead for the project and drives the technical development roadmap, open source policy and product development. She also serves as the lead maintainer in consultation with the Technical Steering Committee (TSC).
